Coin of the Week Sept. 13th 2012

This is the second post in the new blog series "Coin of the Week".

This week's Coin comes from Macau, one of two Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong.

The 2009 250 Patacas 10th Anniversary of Return of Sovereignty of Macau 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin is the coin of the week.

The year 2009 poses exceptional and historical significance for Macau. Ever since the sovereignty of Macao was reverted to the Motherland ten years ago, Macau has embarked into another historical era. After ten years of changes and development, today Macau has emerged from its old self and blossomed into a vibrant city, glowing with brilliance.

On the reverse, The sculpture of the "Lotus Flower in Full Bloom" erected on the Golden Lotus Square in Macau. This was a significant gift by the State Council of China to the people of Macau in 1999. The lotus flower in full bloom symbolizes the everlasting prosperity of Macau. A square knot, also known as a binding knot, is featured on the coin under the lotus sculpture. It signifies the perfect binding of China and Macau under the principle of one country, two systems.

While on the obverse, The Statue of A-Ma, which stands at 19.99m on Coloane Peak. The height of the statue symbolizes the year in which China regained sovereignty over Macau. The Statue of A-Ma is a very significant part of Macau as she is believed to be a deity protecting Macau, the sea around Macau and her people.

This coin is now on sale for a limited time. Be sure to have a look at it and while you're at our site be sure to check out the New Coins and Sales sections.
