Collect with the Mind of an Investor

Our design team has created a brand new Newsletter for customers who have signed up at our site www.coinmerc.com. In the Newsletter we offer this statement "Collect with the Mind of an Investor".

Coin collecting is often thought of as avid hobbyists running to the bank to exchange for rolls of pennies, nickels, and quarters. Searching for "Wheat Pennies", 90% Nickel, Nickels, and other rare sorts of circulation coins. That type of coin collecting, in my opinion, is a very fun, passionate hobby.

The type of collecting we offer is something more than a hobby. Much like buying a stock, buying a rare, low mintage modern world coin is an investment.

Not only are the coins worth their weight in metal but also the theme of the coin can add tremendous value to a coin.

When I first began in this business, it baffled me that some coins could sell out from the mint in a few days and others will probably never be sold out. What drives that? In my opinion, it is the connection between the theme of the coin and the collector.

Coins with a theme that relates to you and your life add the true value to these investments. For example, the Fiji 2011 $100 Pacific Sovereign 1oz Gold coin. Depicting a beautiful Island beach setting. Waves rolling in, palm tree swaying in the wind. Whether you've been to an island as beautiful as this or have always dreamed of going, this coin offers the peace and tranquility of a wonderful vacation. Also, this coin offers a tremendous investment opportunity. At One Ounce, .999 gold this is a great addition to any collection.

The next time your browsing through a rare coin catalog or website, remember this is much more then your typical investments. This is a wonderful opportunity to invest in precious metals and in precious connections to the theme of the coins.

Dont miss out on all the latest Coin Mercantile news and info. Sign up with our Newsletter today.

Finally, I have to disclose that there are no guarantees about whether or not a coin or any collectible, material thing or instrument in any asset class will increase in value and past performance of a coin’s return is not indicative of future results.

47 Prefectures of Japan Series

1oz Silver Proof "Ibaraki Prefecture"
"The Land of the Rising Sun" named so because the characters that makes Japan's name mean "sun-origin". Japan has a total of 6,852 islands extending along the Pacific coast of East Asia. Through constant progression and evolution as a country, Japan has evolved from over 300 individual prefectures pre-1871 to what is now 47 prefectures. Following the Local Autonomy law of 1947 these prefectures were given governments, parliaments to allow for more political power within each prefecture. Each prefecture is overseen by an elected governor, legislature and administrative bureaucracy. Each prefecture is further divied into cities, towns and villages. With recent economical issues, the nation is currently undergoing administrative reorganization by merging many of the cities,

towns and villages together.

This process is expected to cut administrative costs. In 2008 the Japanese government launched the commemorative "47 Prefectures of Japan" coin series. Much like the U.S. quarters depicting each state. This series is consistent with Japan's reputation for fine quality and craftsmanship. The Japan Mint will make 1oz .999 Silver colorful coins and also a 7gm bimetallic rendition depicting something unique to each prefecture.

Coins featured in this blog include the 2009 1000 Yen Prefectures of Japan - Ibaraki 1oz Silver Proof. The Ibaraki prefecture takes pride in its traditional culture and nature, as well as in being a center of science and technology in Japan. Also the 2009 1000 Yen Prefectures of Japan - Nagano 1oz Silver Proof Coin. Nagano being most commonly known as the home of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Below is the 2010 1000 Yen Prefectures of Japan - Fukui 1oz Silver Proof. Most notably famous for the many dinosaur fossils that have been excavated in Fukui which are on display at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.

1oz Silver Proof "Fukui Prefecture"
Their are currently 23 of the 47 prefecture's coins released from the mint. The series will run through 2016. This coin series is among the more difficult to find due to limited availability outside the country. Be sure to act fast as most of the early releases have already sold out and will be difficult to find for sale.

Memorial Day

We have a very special holiday coming up on Monday the 28th of May. Memorial Day. A day to remember soldiers who have lost their lives protecting civilians. Throughout history we have unfortunately lost many loved ones and Memorial Day has become a day to honor these fallen loved ones.

Following the Civil War, the federal government began a program of creating national cemeteries for those lost in the war. Both the Union and Confederacy held separate memorials.

Among the first was held in Charleston, South Carolina. At least 257 Union soldiers had died after being held as prisoners of war in the Charleston Race Course. Freedmen (freed slaves) knew of the Union soldiers and decided to honor them. Nearly 10,000 people, mostly African Americans, gathered on May 1st, 1865 to commemorate the dead. A historian David W. Blight wrote this about the day: "This was the first Memorial Day. African Americans invented Memorial day in Charleston, South Carolina. What you have there is black Americans recently freed from slavery announcing to the world with their flowers, their feet, and their songs what the war had been about. What they basically were creating was the Independence Day of a Second American Revolution."

Across the South, many associations were founded, mostly by women, to create and care for permanent cemeteries and also organize commemorative ceremonies for Confederate soldiers. In 1866, women in Columbus, Mississippi laid flowers at the graves of both the Union and Confederate casualties buried in its cemetery. On May 5th, 1868, General John A. Logan issued a proclamation that "Decoration Day" should be held nationwide.

Today many people observe Memorial Day by visiting memorials and cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3pm local time. Volunteer organizations such as Boy Scouts of America often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries.

No matter your geographic location in the world. No matter what country you are from. No matter what war was fought. Losing loved ones on a battlefield is something that deserves recognition. What better way to memorialize a fallen loved one then to own a keepsake that will last a lifetime. A keepsake you can share with your children, share the stories behind the coin and how it relates to you and your families personal history.

However you decide to spend your Memorial Day weekend, remember that it is much more than a three day weekend to kick off the start of summer. It is a holiday that observes those that have given their lives to protect us.

Please feel free to post a comment regarding your perspective or opinion of Memorial Day and be sure to visit our website for coins commemorating wars, battles and fallen soldiers throughout the world.

Gold and It's Many Uses Part 2

Along with being symbols of power, beauty, purity and accomplishment. Gold has been used most as currency. Throughout history gold has been closely linked to monetary value. The first gold coins were minted in the Lydia Kingdom within the ancient region of Asia Minor (Turkey) around 610 BC. The first coins minted in China are thought to date around 600 BC.

Its interesting to me, the connection between Gold and money. The value of gold today, one ounce represents $1638 American dollars. Even at such a high rate, there is not enough gold to cover the amount of paper money we have printed. What if one day, our printed paper was no longer accepted? Growing up in a world surrounded by this paper given monetary value. I've seen the power of inflation and what a few choice people can do to determine the value of the printed paper. That is why as I get older, I'm finding that maybe I should not put all my monetary "eggs" into one basket. That being diversified truly means have more diversification. Stocks, Bonds, and Money Markets, those all rely on the paper money system. I'd like to have a part of my "eggs" placed into something tangible, something that has withstood the test of time and continues to be on the rise. That's where Gold, Silver and other precious metals come into play. There's a reason for the term "worth it's wait in gold" and I'd like to make it understood I'm most certainly not dismissing other investment opportunities, I am simply stating my case that precious metals have a firm place in my investment portfolio.

Though I explained earlier I was not simply try to sell more coins. It wouldn't be wise to withhold the use of coins as an example of the prominence of gold.

To the left is what is widely considered the world's first minted Gold coin. Known as "The Lydian Lion", played a large role in the coinage we know today. It weighed 4.71 grams made of a gold and silver alloy.

To the right is as fine example as any coin in establishing the distance mankind has come from our  coinage ancestry. This is a Canada 2011 CAD $350 .999 Gold Proof Coin weighing in just over a troy ounce at 35 grams. This particular coin is representative of a Mount Avens Rose. A rose found at high altitudes in the mountains of western Canada. The dryas integrifolia is a hardy species that was declared the official floral emblem of the northwest territories in 1957.

Between these two coins lies a wealth of rare modern world numismatics, awaiting eager collectors, avid investors and centuries to come of maintaining golds place in the world.

Gold and its Many Uses.

Though I would love to sell you some of our wonderful gold coins. That's not the purpose of today's blog. Today's blog will be focusing primarily on the world wonder known as Gold.

If someone were to ask you, what is Gold? What would your answer be? A shiny metal? A ring? necklace? or would your answer be, A chemically inert element. Widely used throughout history for things ranging from currency, religious symbolism, electronics to medicine and sun-visors for space suits.

A common misconception with Gold is that it is only a rare shiny expensive piece of jewelry. What most people don't know about gold is how abundant it actually is and the vast array of uses humans have found for it. Well if you compare gold to some of its metal brethren, like steel for example. Then you would be safe in assuming it is rare. The world pours more steel in one hour then it has poured Gold since the beginning of recorded history. But despite that an estimated 165,000 tons or roughly 5.3 billion troy ounces of Gold has been mined in human history.

South African Mine
Gold has been found on every continent on the planet. In South Africa, there are mines that descend 12,000 feet and reach temperatures of 130 degrees. To produce an ounce of gold, it requires 38 man hours, 1400 gallons of water, and enough electricity to run a large house for ten days. On top of that it takes chemicals such as cyanide and borax to remove the Gold from the mine.  Lastly, it is estimated that about 50% of the worlds gold was recovered from South Africa.

The world of industry has found many uses for Gold. Due to Gold's ability to reflect electromagnetic radiation, it has been used in a number of aeronautical industries. Such as protective coating on many satellites, infrared protective face plates in thermal protection suits as well as astronauts' helmets and electronic warfare planes like the EA-6B Prowler.

Because of Gold's conductive properties and resistance to corrosion, it has also been used for electrical wiring and electrical connectors. Other uses for Gold in electronics include sliding contacts inside toggles in highly humid or corrosive atmospheres, as well as contacts with a very high failure cost (certain computers, communications equipment, spacecraft, jet aircraft engines).

The very high luster, desirable yellow color and a resistance to tarnish make Gold a perfect candidate for Fine Jewelry. For thousands of years gold has been used to make ornamental objects and  jewelry. Almost every established culture throughout history has used gold as a symbol of power, beauty, purity and accomplishment.

To be concluded later this week...
